JANUARY KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during January 2011 (504,500 movements) changed little compared with December 2010 (504,700 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.2% in November 2010 and 0.1% in December 2010. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 4.7% higher than in January 2010.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2011, short-term visitor arrivals (502,900 movements) recorded a decrease of 0.4% compared with December 2010 (505,100 movements). This followed monthly increases of 1.1% in November 2010 and 0.4% in December 2010.
  • Original estimates: There were 479,400 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in January 2011.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES FROM AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures during January 2011 (609,600 movements) increased 0.5% compared with December 2010 (606,600 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.2% for November 2010 and 0.3% for December 2010. The current trend estimate for departures is 9.4% higher than in January 2010.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During January 2011, short-term resident departures (617,300 movements) increased by 2.0% compared with December 2010 (605,000 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.8% for November 2010 and 0.4% for December 2010.
  • Original estimates: There were 554,200 short-term resident departures from Australia during January 2011.
